The Path Is Made By Walking On It
We’re all moving along on a road, hoping to reach our destination. For some the destination is very clear. When they reach it they think the journey is over. It is always a surprise for these travelers, to realize that they must get up and go forth once again. Where to now? they may ask. What is the purpose of yet another journey?
For others the road weaves and wobbles. They take detours, explore the scenery, or simply have no idea where they’re going. They want to get there anyway, the quicker the better. Others enjoy walking along familiar paths, taking the same trip over and over. It reassures them that all is well and the world is safe and stable. If the road changes, or signposts fall down, they have no idea where they are. Some dissolve in confusion.
Then there are travelers who fall into potholes, wherever one appears. Some get up and out easily, others explore the potholes thoroughly, or make a home down there.
When will there be rest for all of these travelers? How will they find the best pathway for them? A student asked a Master the question, “Where is the road to Hanshan?” By that he might have meant, where is the road to the peak of the mountain, to the end of all my wanderings?”
The teacher replied: “There is no road to Hanshan.” Or, he might also have said, “The path is made by walking on it. “ Get up, take your steps and see where you are, and where you’re headed.
There is no path without actually walking on it. And ultimately, you may also find that there is no place to go other than where you are. Be there, one hundred per cent and inevitably, the next step becomes clear. Dare to carve out your own path and you will find the secret of your journey.
